I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2002 and worked in the Evelina London Cleft Service based at St Thomas’ Hospital for over 20 years, from 2003 - 2024. I was also the Lead Speech and Language Therapist for this service from 2014 - 2024.
Working in this exceptional multidisciplinary team allowed me to concentrate on the “Speech” aspect of our role as Speech and Language Therapists, giving me the opportunity to support children make progress in improving the clarity of their speech through fun and engaging therapy.
I have specialist knowledge and experience in speech sound difficulties relating to:
- Cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction for speech - where there are speech difficulties arising from a diagnosis of a cleft palate or velopharyngeal dysfunction for speech, (this is where the soft palate isn't able to make an adequate closure with the back of the throat in order to produce the oral pressure required for speech production).
- 22q11 deletion syndrome - where there are speech difficulties arising from a diagnosis of 22q11 deletion syndrome.
- Developmental speech sound difficulties - where there may be delays in a child's normally developing speech sound patterns which require support to help them progress.
- Articulation difficulties - where a child finds it difficult to produce a sound accurately.
- Phonological speech sound difficulties - where a child may be able to produce a sound correctly but is not using it in the correct place in a word.
- Motor speech difficulties - where a child's ability to produce accurate speech sound placements is affected by a neurological impairment affecting the planning, co-ordination and/or motor control of their speech movements.
- Active nasal fricative pattern.....
